A random post about Locking!

Hello everyone! It's Ceekay here once again... =)

As we're coming near to the end of 2008, it's perhaps a good time for us to look back and evaluate the locking scene in Singapore... In case you guys didn't realise, Lion City Lockers was formed in March 2008, meaning that we are already 9 months old!

It has been remarkable as to how the locking scene in Singapore has grown during the past 9 months. Just barely a year ago, one could count the total number of recognised lockers in Singapore with 2 hands. Yet fast forward to the end of 2008, we see people picking up locking almost everywhere, and with more lockers being recognised within the local dance scene.

Credits definitely go to Chunky, the man who formed Lion City Lockers and made it possible for the locking scene to grow so rapidly. His vision was simple; he wanted to spread the love of locking and funk across Singapore, and also encourage more people to learn the art form of locking. Hence LCL was born, and the seed of locking has now grown up here to be a young but strong tree.

So nowadays we see people picking up locking from dance studios, as well as joining LCL and gaining their first exposure to what locking is. But still, one question lingers in everyone's mind, and it's also something that many people have came to asked me: "How do you improve in locking? What does Locking mean to you?"

I think I shall answer these 2 questions here; hopefully it will inspire all lockers out there. My opinions are, however, purely my own perception of locking. It is still up to your own personal intepretation to understand what locking is. =)

Locking, as most of you should know, was founded during the Soul Funk era in the 1970s, by this man called Don Campbell. Just like for any other dance genres, the music plays a big part when it comes to Locking. Hence, it is important to know the history of locking and understand why Locking was done to Soul/Funk music in the 1970s. At that time, locking was born on a well known TV show called "The Soul Train", where black americans got to express themselves by dancing to Soul and Funk music.

It doesn't matter to them whether the moves look good; they just wanted to enjoy the freedom of expressing themselves, and dance to the music the way they love to. That is why they look so funky... Every move they do is natural, and comes from the bottom of their heart. Everyone has their own character and their own way of intepreting the music!

Check out this video here to see an example of blacks dancing at "The Soul Train":

Therefore, in my opinions, you gotta feel the music and express yourself from the bottom of your heart. Techniques and form are important of course, but the foundation of it all comes from your love for the music as well as your own way of expressing yourself. Techniques, form, angles are things you can always work on to improve by constantly practising hard, but truly dancing to the music is something that is born in you... Feel the music through your own character, dance with your own style and your own way of intepreting the music. =)

Also, remain humble in dance always. There's always something for you to learn, something new for you to try, and every time you dance it should be a new experience. Even when you hear the same songs over and over again, you may dance differently to the songs everytime as you can intepret it in so many different ways. I'm sure that this applies to any form of dance, not just locking.

Last but not least, enjoy the music and stay happy when you dance! Locking is so different from many other street dance genres, because it is funky, happy and it celebrates! Be happy to dance, and enjoy expressing yourself like there's no one watching you. You should do locking as if you're celebrating your freedom to dance! There may be only a certain number of moves we have in locking, but there's endless ways of doing each move and different ways of combining them. You can always add in your own flavour, your own moves... Don't stop exploring!

This post may be long, but I hope that it has inspired you somehow. Locking may not be easy to many of you, and the road towards improving is long and arduous... But I'm sure that as long as you truly love funk music and enjoy dancing, nothing can stop you from being the dancer you can be.

Stay funky always, and enjoy your festive holidays coming up!

Cheers,
Ceekay. =)

Well Done!

Hey guys, this is Ceekay here.

Didn't had the chance to talk to u guys after Floor The Love was over, so here's my message to all of you funky people out there:

First of all, I would like to say a loud "WELL DONE"! It was a great performance, everything went well, the audience liked it and Chunky gave the thumbs up for the performance. I'm very proud of you guys!

Secondly, a big THANK YOU to all of you who had performed or played a part for our performance. It had been tough on you guys coming down for practices and cooperating so well during the mere 5 practices we had. It was really quite a miracle actually that we did everything in 5 practices yea.

Next, I hope that all of you had enjoyed yourselves, be it for the performance or for the session that we had on Sunday. For those who came on Sunday, I'm sure that all of you had learnt valuable lessons and tips from the two dope locking masters from Taiwan. So keep it up and don't stop practicing, and we'll continue to spread the love of locking across our funky lion city!

Last but not least, Lion City Lockers will be taking a short break and we'll resume sessions next month. In the meantime there will be several dance productions going on, such as O School Recital, Fbodz's and NRA's productions... Take your time to attend all these events and broaden your horizon even more!

So stay funky everyone, I'll see you guys at the next LCL session. Cheers!

Locking Goes On The Mainstream Again!

The Superman Lovers Vs Delegations "You & I"
Directed by: Poloemaro

Not since the 1970s and grooving 80s, no group has ever appeared on mainstream television to feature the pure form of Locking. That silent streak is now gone with a super cool routine put together by France's very own Jeremy, Willow, P-Lock and Jimmy Soul. This video will seem pretty familiar to some of you who have been following up on The Lockers classic videos. It acts as a tribute to Toni Basil's dance concept video of Lockers and Ballerinas doing a dance fusion the the music of Swanlake. This was probably somewhere in the late 1970s.

The modern touch of this revival still gives that similar feeling of the original concept. I love it. Great job in pushing Locking to the modern times. In many years to come, this video will be a classic in the name of another classic. Super funky.

Chunky Goes on Omy!

Photobucket

Chunky was surfing randomly over some article site and accidentally found his silly face on an online newspaper site. Interviewed by Wendy from MyPaper, here is a little something about the chunky man himself. Look, they even have a corny Vodcast.

ps. Chunky is not 19. he is 21.

The article is published in Mandarin. But fret not. Our funky secretary comes to our rescue. She translated the article and it looks something like :

can you imagine 'locking' your hands and legs when u're dancing?
dont worry, the locking over here is about stopping at a point .
locking have become the recent dance trend which is the youngsters favourites.

locking was discovered by an american don campbell.
locking mostly uses hands, emphasising on the sharpness of the dance.
its different from hophop because locking is a funk style which is a part of Old school

19 year old ian,one of the lockers have open classes for learners.
he have richful locking dance experience and have had been to other countries for performance.,even
performing for president nathan at the MCYS event .he is also the
champion for lock category at last year's stomp the yard dance competition.

talking about the process of learning locking, he said" initially i watched online videos and
learnt it step by step, because theres no professional instructor, thus i wont be able to know
whether i learnt the wrong thing.

for the sake of learning locking, ian have been to taiwan and have had interacted, exchanged
pointers with dancers from taiwan ,korea, france and america.

its defintely a tough learning process for any dance and of course gaining the ample satisfaction and fun .
especially in locking, its a kind of party atmosphers feeling and adding in own's flavour.

"i always encouraged my students not to only learn from me but also adding in flavour thru ownself discovery."

last year, october, ian started teaching locking at O-school.

he wish that thru teachings and videos, more people could know of the existence of locking.

he also started preparing a fliming plan, aiming to spread locking awide.

until now, he have uploaded over 70 dance videos on youtube, just search"locking singapore and chunky" and u'll find ian's video.

ps. as you probably can realize, the english was kinda weird. and seemed like it has been directly translated bluntly from mandarin. Which is part of the fun part of why we decided not to change any of it for visual grammatical humor sake. Good one Su Ling!

Locking4Life!

Photobucket

It is finally here guys. Gemini's take on the new Locking Concept the came he came out with. With close to a year or two, keeping people in suspense we can finally find out what he has up his sleeves. Gemini's Locking concept is the duality of the roots of locking brought foward to modern times. Exactly like what he explained to a handful of us during his workshop in Singapore, Locking 4 Life stresses on the importance of Locking in street dance culture. Have a look, its cool stuff. Gemini looks like celebrity material. Cool.

Some Taiwanese Friends

At a recent trip to Taiwan, Fong & Chunky had the privilege to meet other Lockers from the beautiful state of Kaohsiung. Here is what you get when you cross between a Love Hotel, late night without sleep, a bunch of kids who can't think straight and a narrow corridor. Enjoy the video. I feel sorry for the people sleeping inside the rooms.

In Order Of Appearence:

1. Fong aka Fongky (LCL/Sunset Alleycats/Fbodz)
2. Chunky (LCL/Sunset Alleycats/Fbodz)
3. Sun (Max Studio)
4. Ah Niu (Funky Chicken)
5. Yu Zhen (Junkie Lockers)
6. Abo (Junkie Lockers)
7. Wei Wei (Junkie Lockers)

Birth Of The Lion City Lockers!

Photobucket

17th of Mar was the day where a motley bunch of Locking enthusiast got together to cook up a session of great funky fun. Lion City Lockers; a community dedicated to the old-school danceform of Locking, is born.

Lion City Lockers aims to bring together people from all backgrounds to share and celebrate the funk and exchange pointers about the dance. Hoping to up the level of the danceform locally, LCL has big dreams for Locking and it's future standards in Singapore.

Join us every 2 mondays for our meets and check this space for updates on our Locking drop ins!

Highlight Clip of the 17th March Session

Here were some of the cool things that happened during the the fun/chilling first session we had. Need not explain how much fun we had after seeing this eh? Big props for the 2 solo-ist dancers at the back of the clip. Shin (first solo) was definitely the most grooviest of them all, demonstrating a relaxed yet funky style of Locking. Newcomer, Ridzuan (2nd solo) was already dropping jaws with his surprise ground moves!
